Fire Rated Steel Doors

Fire-rated steel doors are designed to help maintain fire compartmentation and restrict the spread of fire through openings within a building. A fire door should always be treated as a complete tested system. The door leaf, frame, hinges, seals, glazing, louvres, closers and locking hardware must all be suitable for the required fire performance.

Internal Fire Doors

Internal steel fire doors can be used between fire compartments, stairwells, corridors, plant rooms, service areas and other parts of a building where fire separation is required. Steel construction provides excellent durability for high-traffic environments while maintaining the required fire performance when correctly specified and installed.

External Fire Doors

Where a fire-resisting opening is required within an external wall, suitable external steel fire doors can combine weather resistance and security with certified fire performance. These applications require careful specification because the doorset may need to satisfy fire, environmental and everyday access requirements simultaneously.

Fire Resistance Options

Different fire-resistance periods are available depending on the doorset and the building's fire strategy. Systems available from manufacturer include doors offering performance from approximately 60 minutes through to substantially higher ratings on selected configurations. The required rating should always be determined from the building design, fire strategy or specification rather than simply selecting the highest available figure.

Self-Closing Equipment

Where required, suitable door closers ensure the fire door returns fully into the closed position after use. Correct closing and latching are fundamental to the intended performance of a fire doorset, which is why damaged or incorrectly adjusted closers should never be ignored.

Fire Rated Vision Panels

Suitable fire-resistant glazing can be incorporated into approved doorsets where visibility or natural light is required. Glazing dimensions and arrangements are determined by the tested configuration of the particular door system.

Fire Rated Louvres

Certain certified doorsets can also accommodate tested fire-rated louvres where ventilation through the opening is required. These are specialist components and should not be confused with conventional ventilation grilles installed into standard doors.

Emergency Escape Hardware

Where a fire door also forms part of an escape route, suitable emergency-exit or panic hardware can be included within approved configurations. The correct hardware depends on how the building is occupied and how users are expected to operate the door in an emergency.

Fire Door Maintenance

Fire doors should be inspected regularly to ensure the complete doorset remains in suitable condition.
